      <image:title>History - History</image:title>
<image:caption>On September 14, 1970, Helen Katherine Mason founded the Black Theatre Troupe. As an official in the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department she knew the value of creating needed community based programs. As a longtime Civil Rights activist she knew the power and importance of the Black Arts Movement started in 1965 by playwright Amiri Baraka and his Black Arts Repertory Theater in Harlem. It was her dream to use her experience as a city program developer and as a community activist to call upon activist/artists of the movement in New York and at Howard University to serve as critical advisors and teaching artists.</image:caption>

<image:title>Donations - Audiences know that performances at the Black Theatre Troupe will provoke them to reflect deeply, strengthen their resolve and hopefully act on their convictions. The work of the Black Theatre Troupe uplifts and inspires, creates empathy as well as understanding of perspectives contrary to our own. In a world where people have been isolated and socially distanced, we all need live performances as an outlet more than ever. Our company is unique in the City of Phoenix in that it fulfills a need by providing a safe and nurturing environment specific to artists and people of color who are traditionally underserved. With our increasing growth, popularity and support for our main stage programs, comes added expectations and the responsibility to expand and enhance our youth, educational and community outreach programming.</image:title>
<image:caption>We are only able to do this work because of your belief in and support of our work! Your contribution will allow us to continue to offer more than just entertainment. It will help provide a safe environment where courageous theatre that has the power to inspire and transform can be created.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As with most nonprofit organizations, BTT depends on the work and support of a well-organized Volunteer Guild that is vital to several of the company’s operations. As a member of BTT’s Volunteer Guild your service will help ensure that the company remains a vital part of downtown Phoenix’s cultural fabric and landscape. BTT provides an exciting opportunity for students to complete service to the community while learning the operational aspects of a professional theater and enjoying the power of live theater. Our Volunteer Guild provides ushers, group sales coordinators, concession and box office workers as well as Facility Operation and House Managers. There are also positions for clerical support. To become a member of the Volunteer Guild and provide critical support to the operation of the Black Theatre Troupe please contact Linda Golston, BTT’s Volunteer Guild Coordinator.</image:caption>
