Welcome

At the beginning of the long hot summer of 1970, a City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Supervisor named Helen Katherine Mason noticed the distinct absence of one rich and resonant voice within the arts communities of the Valley and the State of Arizona at large. She dedicated herself to giving that voice a platform from which it could be lifted and heard by all.

From that simple dream, The Black Theatre Troupe was born.

Our return to downtown’s dramatic Viad Tower for our entire 2011-2012 season and most importantly the Winter 2011 completion of our new downtown facility, the Helen K. Mason Center for the Performing Arts, is an affirmation of our company’s increasing importance in the Valley arts community.

As The Black Theatre Troupe begins its 42nd anniversary season of “Preserving the Past and Embracing the Future,” we have programmed a year long celebration that is full of hope, laughter and human compassion — five stories that have the capacity to awaken and stimulate your senses as they unfold on the stage of the Viad’s beautiful Playhouse on the Park.

We are able to do this work because of our audiences — because of people like you. Your support helps to provide a safe environment where courageous theatre, that inspires and transforms, can be created.

We proudly believe that your investment in our company and the work it supports makes The Black Theatre Troupe and visionaries like Helen K. Mason another shining example of our country at its finest.

So join us — See you at the theater.
